The Good of the Hive – Matt Willey at Whatley

As part of Whatley’s 21st anniversary celebrations, we are thrilled to introduce partners who share our values and ethos, bringing something new and vibrant to the Whatley experience. One such partner is the renowned artist and activist Matt Willey. Matt is celebrated for his pioneering work with “The Good of the Hive” project, which he founded to raise awareness about the crucial role honeybees and other pollinators play in our ecosystem and food production. His project emphasizes the interconnectedness of bees with the environment, aiming to inspire collective action to safeguard these essential creatures.

A central aspect of “The Good of the Hive” project is the creation of stunning murals, which Matt travels globally to paint. His ambitious goal is to paint 50,000 honeybees, the number typically found in a healthy hive. Each mural features hundreds or thousands of bees, symbolizing the intricate and vital connections between pollinators and the natural world. Through his art, Matt sparks important conversations about the declining bee populations and the potential repercussions for biodiversity and human agriculture. His work encourages people to learn more and take actionable steps to protect bees.

Community engagement is a fundamental component of Matt’s project. In every location, he involves the local community, and during his time at Whatley, we will host visits from local primary schools, scout, and guide groups. Matt’s work exemplifies how art can be a powerful medium for environmental activism, fostering a sense of community and motivating action toward protecting these vital pollinators.

Matt will be based at Whatley for about three weeks from August 5th 2024. If you are visiting us, please feel free to stop by and watch his work unfolding and ask any questions you may have. This project beautifully represents our environmental commitment as we celebrate our 21st year.
