The Origins of Afternoon Tea

The practice of afternoon tea began in England during the early 19th century. Its origins are often attributed to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting. In the early 1840s, the Duchess found herself feeling peckish during the long gap between the two main meals of the day: lunch and dinner. To stave off her hunger, she began requesting a light meal of tea, bread and butter, and cake to be served in her private quarters around four o’clock in the afternoon.

By the mid-19th century, afternoon tea had evolved into a formal event, particularly in aristocratic circles. The traditional afternoon tea menu expanded to include a variety of sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of pastries and cakes. The introduction of fine china, silver tea services, and beautifully decorated tea tables added to the elegance of the experience.

The custom of afternoon tea also spread beyond England, finding popularity in countries such as India, Australia, and the United States. Each culture adapted the practice to its own tastes and traditions, adding unique twists to the classic menu.
